As it takes me a while to finish a book, I appreciate that feature. She even helps us out by providing a handy 'List of Characters' in the back of the book, and makes sure to re-introduce us with subtle hints, in case we have forgotten who this person is. Mercer draws each character individually, no two alike. Also, there are enough bit players and supporting roles to fill any wide-screen and employ a lot of character actors. Believe me the great heroes and beautiful girls seem like real people. By now, I feel as if I know all the characters as family friends. Mercer keeps you on the edge of your seat, during the dramatic chapters, and has you laughing and enjoying the characters and the dialog during the off duty hours. This is my 5th Mike McBride novel, and I can't say enough about this writer.

He debunks cherished myths, reappraises beloved heroes and upends familiar ideas of musical greatness, arguing that sometimes the best popular music isn't transcendent: it expresses our grudges as well as our hopes, and is motivated by greed as well as inspiration. Distilling a career's worth of knowledge, Sanneh explores the tribes music forms, and how its genres, shape-shifting across the years, give us a way to track larger forces and concerns. Major Labels: A History of Popular Music in Seven Genresįrom his own adolescence, when his allegiance was to punk rock, to his work as one of the essential voices of our time on music and culture at the New York Times and the New Yorker, Kelefa Sanneh has made a deep study of how our popular music unites and divides us. (While not a direct adaptation, much of the spirit of Dispatches made its way into the screenplay of 1987’s Full Metal Jacket, which Herr co-wrote.) Employing techniques that would become hallmarks of New Journalism, Herr produces writing that is like prose rock ‘n’ roll, filled with syncopation, quick cuts and an almost hallucinatory quality that matches the hash that some of the soldiers he introduces us to are fond of smoking to numb their pain. Herr fills his frame with the authentic details that a less brave, less honest reporter would have self-censored out: the drugs, the brutality, the hookers, the pointlessness and the fear and exhaustion of a conscripted Army fighting a hopeless war. Michael Herr’s 1977 memoir of his experiences as a war correspondent for Esquire is an intense, disorienting and often exhilarating look into the unique madness of this conflict. And Dispatches, more than any other book, has shaped what we think the Vietnam War was and what it meant. Every war is absurd, but to the American psyche, Vietnam is still the disastrous military folly by which all others are judged. Top 10 Summer Reads by Lara Avery (The Memory Book). The slaves involved in the rebellion did not leave any records of their own, so analysis of them and their motivations must be extrapolated from existing records and histories made by slave-owners. Brown's thesis is that, beyond just being a local event, it is in fact part of a network of overlapping Atlantic wars: an extension of the warfare in East Africa at the time, a war between black slaves and white slave-owners, a war between different factions of the enslaved, and the Seven Years War. This event is important in Jamaican history, and Prof. This book, newly released, is an academic history of Tacky's Revolt and the Coromantee War, slave uprisings in Jamaica in 1760 - 61. I promised more black history books, so here's one. |
